FOR RELEASE: IMMEDIATE, Friday, November 17, 2000 |
GOVERNOR PATAKI ANNOUNCES $6.7 MILLION FOR TRAFFIC SAFETY Funding to Help Communities Promote Seat Belt Use, Child Passenger Safety Governor George E. Pataki today announced $6.7 million for local highway safety projects to promote seat belt law enforcement, child passenger safety, and increased detection of alcohol- impaired driving across the State. At the direction of the Governor's Traffic Safety Committee (GTSC), a total of 345 grants will be presented to local communities, not-for- profit organizations and law enforcement agencies. "New York's roads and highways are safer than ever, but we must continue to improve our record with local traffic safety initiatives that help save lives," Governor Pataki said. "With our coordinated efforts to expand enforcement of the seat belt law, promote the correct use of child safety seats and crack down on drunk drivers, we are reducing traffic deaths and injuries and making our State's roadways as safe as possible." A major emphasis of the Fiscal Year 2001 grants is the statewide Child Passenger Safety Program, which is designed to encourage the use and correct installation of child safety seats. Forty- nine communities will share $470,000 in funding for one or more of the following initiatives: implementing permanent fitting stations for child safety seat installations and inspections, training child passenger safety specialists, and conducting child safety seat check events. In addition, 174 communities will share $1.5 million in funding for the statewide "Buckle Up New York" campaign. This campaign includes dedicated overtime patrols to participate in road checks with State Police and other agencies in statewide enforcement sweeps, as well as local patrols targeting non-compliance with New York's safety belt law. Acting Motor Vehicle Commissioner Kenneth J. Ringler, Jr. said, "Under Governor Pataki's leadership, the GTSC has identified and addressed our major highway safety needs, enabling us to dramatically improve overall safety on New York State roadways." Governor Pataki's Traffic Safety Committee coordinates programs and research efforts that improve highway safety, in addition to administering a federal grant program funded by the Transportation Equity Act for the 21st Century. GTSC grants are based on strategic traffic safety plans developed by counties, local governments and not-for-profit organizations. A complete list of awards is available on the DMV website, which is located at http://www.nysdmv.com. |
