Department of Motor Vehicles Commissioner and Chair of the Governor's Traffic Safety Committee (GTSC) Barbara J. Fiala gathered with members of the GTSC, law enforcement and other local officials in Binghamton today to announce the start of the Labor Day STOP-DWI crackdown, which runs from August 19 through September 5.

Shaker High School in Latham served as the filming location last summer for four different videos featured on YouTube and the Department of Motor Vehicles' Younger Driver Web Site. Several Shaker students are featured in the videos currently being used to educate young drivers statewide. School staff and the students who participated in the creation of the videos were honored today with the Governor's Traffic Safety Committee (GTSC) 'Partners for Safety' award. This was one of three such awards presented this year.

Statewide Usage Rate Increases to A Record 91 Percent

Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) Commissioner and Chair of the Governor's Traffic Safety Committee (GTSC) Barbara J. Fiala today announced that the seat belt compliance rate for New York has reached an all-time high. This year's statewide usage rate increased from 90 percent in 2010 to 91 percent for 2011.

Governor Andrew M. Cuomo today signed a new law that strengthens the enforcement against drivers who use handheld electronic devices for activities such as texting while a vehicle is in motion. The legislation makes this action a primary traffic offense, giving law enforcement the power to stop drivers solely for engaging in this activity.

U.S. TRANSPORTATION SECRETARY LAHOOD AND DMV COMMISSIONER FIALA DISCUSS RESULTS OF LANDMARK DISTRACTED DRIVING PROJECT
Syracuse One of Two Cities Nationwide to Participate in Pilot Program

In April, 2010 Syracuse was one of only two cities in the country to be selected by the U. S. Department of Transportation to conduct a model Distracted Driving Enforcement Project (DDEP) aimed at curbing distracted driving. The Project called, "Phone in One Hand. Ticket in the Other." combined enforcement efforts with increased public awareness through a targeted media campaign. The year-long Project was officially brought to a close today at a press conference in Syracuse that was attended by the U.S. Department of Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood and Department of Motor Vehicles Commissioner Barbara J. Fiala as well as representatives from local law enforcement. At the press conference Secretary LaHood reported that hand held cell phone use and texting while driving decreased in Syracuse by 32 percent as a result of the DDEP effort.

This Year's Mobilization Focuses on Nighttime Enforcement of Seat Belt Use

Motorists who do not wear their seat belts while driving at night are the current focus of the 2011 statewide "Click it or Ticket, Buckle Up New York" campaign that began May 23 and runs through June 5. The Governor's Traffic Safety Committee (GTSC) and officials from various state and law enforcement agencies announced the enforcement period today at a press event at New York State Police Troop G headquarters in Loudonville.

FINAL WAVE OF DISTRACTED DRIVING PROJECT ANNOUNCED
Enforcement Part of National Distracted Driving Awareness Month

The Governor's Traffic Safety Committee (GTSC) and officials from various state and law enforcement agencies announced today that the fourth and final wave of the Distracted Driving Enforcement Project (DDEP) will be conducted in the City of Syracuse from April 4-17. The officials also reminded the public that April has been designated as National Distracted Driving Awareness Month.
