DRIVERS CAUTIONED TO BE AWARE OF MOTORCYCLISTS THIS SUMMER DMV Commissioner Reminds Motorists of Sport's Popularity

Albany -- New York State Department of Motor Vehicle Commissioner Raymond P. Martinez reminded drivers to be aware of the many motorcyclists on the highways as winter is replaced by warm, sunny weather and to share the roadways with the growing numbers of motorcycles. Governor Pataki recently proclaimed May as Motorcycle Awareness and You Month.

"A growing number of motorcyclists take to New York's nearly 1,500 miles of highways each spring to enjoy the pleasures of riding and as a popular form of recreation, '' said Commissioner Martinez. "The popularity of motorcycle riding is evident since New York now has more than 200,000 registered motorcycles and more than 500,000 licensed motorcyclists.''

To raise motorcycle awareness, New York State participates in a national campaign called "Motorcycle Awareness and You'' which is designed to inform motorists, truck drivers and pedestrians that the motorcycle season has begun. Tens of thousands of motorcyclists participate in the world's largest touring rally, "Americade,'' held in June in Lake George.

"DMV reminds all drivers to be aware of motorcyclists and urges motorcyclists to seek rider education,'' said Commissioner Martinez. "All highway users must work together to achieve greater levels of safety by sharing roadways, obeying traffic laws, and developing other smart highway safety habits.''

In its support of the motorcycle safety program, DMV provides the motorcycle road test waiver option as well as license point and insurance reduction benefits to those who successfully complete the Motorcycle Safety Foundation's beginning rider course. The recommended training is offered through the Motorcycle Association of New York State, Inc. at 21 training sites throughout New York State.
