Operation Safe Stop is a cooperative project supported by the New York State Governor's Traffic Safety Committee, the New York State Education Department, the New York Association for Pupil Transportation, the New York State School Bus Contractors Association, the student transportation industry and state, county, city and local law enforcement agencies. Their mission is to promote school bus safety through education enforcement efforts. |
Drivers must stop when the school bus red lights are flashing. |
Even on divided, multilane highways or school grounds, drivers must stop for flashing red lights. |
Penalties for illegally passing a school bus range from $250 - $1,000 fines; points on your license; and/or possible imprisonment. |
Remember Operation Safe Stop! The memory of hitting or killing a child may be one you carry for the rest of your life! |
Obey traffic signals and/or traffic officers. |
Make eye contact with the driver(s) so they see you before you begin to cross. |
Always use crosswalks whenever they are available. |
Watch for cars backing out of parking spaces and driveways. |
Never walk or run directly into the street. |
Always use sidewalks whenever they are available. |
Stop at the curb or at the edge of the road before crossing. |
When sidewalks are unavailable, walk on the left side of the road, facing traffic. |
Look LEFT-RIGHT-LEFT to make sure the road is clear BEFORE you cross the street. |
Remember: Drivers are required by law to take great care to avoid hitting pedestrians. |
