Guide to Using GTSC Grant Application Word Forms

The GTSC is providing its FFY 2009 highway safety grant program applications in Microsoft Word 2000 format only. The applications for the BUNY, Child Passenger Safety, and STEP are protected fill-in forms. The HS-1 applications for 402 programs used by local, state and not-for-profit agencies are regular Word documents.
Do not use previous years' grant application documents, they will be returned.

If you do not have Microsoft Word or a compatible word processor, or if you have a version older than Word 2000, you may have trouble using the GTSC grant applications. In that case, you may need to use the Microsoft Office Converters and Viewers that are available from Microsoft's site. If you are using a Microsoft Word or compatible word processor in a version higher (newer) than Word 2003, please save your document as the lower (older) version before you email it to the GTSC.

Downloading the Grant Application Document:

Go to the Forms page of the GTSC web site http://www.SafeNY.ny.gov to access the list of applications. Clicking on the application's link will open the file in the browser. When the file has opened, you can save it to your PC using File | Save As from your browser menu. Alternately, hover over the link and right-click with your mouse, and save to your computer using File | Save As.

About the Grant Application Document:

Open the file on your computer. Some of the application forms are protected fill-in documents, so you may make entries in the text form fields and check boxes only. If you are using a protected document, save your work frequently and save before you print. Spell check will not work in the protected Word forms. The non-protected documents do not have limitations on where you may edit, however you should not change the existing text on the applications.

All of the applications have that grant program's instructions at the beginning of the document, followed by the application form and worksheets that you will complete.

How to Use the Protected Fill-in Application Forms - BUNY, CPS, STEP and HS-1:

When you see the document on your computer screen, the text fields where you will be typing are represented as shaded boxes. The shading does not appear when printed.
The cursor will only point to and allow changes to be typed into the text fields and check boxes. You cannot make any other changes to the document.
The font for the text fields is pre-set and cannot be changed. Font styles, tabs, margins, and other types of formatting changes are not possible.
Text fields expand as you type text into them.
The spell check does not function in protected documents.
Move the cursor to the field and begin typing, do not use the enter key to move between entry fields.
Move the cursor by using:
- the mouse to point and click to each field,
- the tab key to move the cursor to the next field, or
- the arrow keys to move the cursor.
To mark a check box, do either of the following:
- Tab to the check box and use the space bar to mark it.
- Click the check box with the mouse to mark it.
To unmark a check box, do either of the following:
- Tab to marked check box and use the space bar to unmark it.
- Click the marked check box with the mouse to unmark it.

Alternately, you can print the application and fill it in by hand or with a typewriter.

Save your work frequently. Save before you print.
