NYS CPS Advisory Board Meeting Minutes
January 14, 2008

 

Old Business:

The results of the election of officers are: Cindy Dort, Chair; Marjorie Marciano, Secretary; and Travis Dann, Sergeant at Arms. They will hold a one year term.

Members of the Board were asked to join a Committee for the upcoming year.

Committee Reports:

Training and Education Committee will review the DVDs of the CEU workshops filmed at the CPS Regional Conference in Buffalo. They will find out from Safe Kids what needs to be done in order to use the DVDs for CEU credits. Also, the committee will work on updating the curriculum for the Technical Update Class.

Public Outreach Committee is working on a CPS awareness project targeting retail stores. The Committee will create brochures to be used for distribution.

Nominating Committee made recommendations for Regional Coordinator positions and the following people were approved by the Board: Thomas McDonnell, Region 1, Mary Jo Kohl, Region 3, and Margaret Beers, Region 4. Donna Adams, Region 5 and Mark Hoffacker, Region 11 will remain on the Board to cover their regions.

Legislative Committee will continue to work on updating the booster seat law in New York to age 8 and pursuing a Liability Immunity Law for Technicians. Two bills are currently in the legislature regarding requiring restraints for all backseat passengers.

Organizational Committee will be revising the by-laws to include nomination procedures and vacancy issues.

Communications Committee is working on a statewide campaign for Child Passenger Safety Week. The plan is for car seat check events to be held in major cities in all the regions with extensive media coverage.

New Business:

NHTSA updates were presented by Shannon Purdy. New materials from NHTSA on LATCH education and a new logo will be available in 2008 Pennsylvania has joined NHTSA Region 2. The NHTSA media planner for Child Passenger safety will be available in June. Traffic Safety Facts on booster seat laws and usage were handed out to Board members. Board members were asked to give NHTSA feedback on traffic safety priorities.

Technician Training classes in all the regions should be scheduled as soon as possible and submitted to the CPS State Coordinator by the end of January. The 2008 classes will be posted on the GTSC Training Calendar on www.safeny.com.

The next Regional CPS Conference will be held in Atlantic City, New Jersey on September 24 - 26, 2008. The lodging for NY technicians will be at the Sheraton and the cost of registration this year was increased to $125. More information on the conference will be available in February.

The Board received information from the GTSC on the importance of submitting progress reports on grant activities; accountability for grant events; changes to the 2009 grant applications; and the Annual Report for the CPS Program to NHTSA.

The Health Department Bureau of Injury Prevention provided updated death, injury and hospitalization county/state statistics on child occupants 0 to 8 years.

Meeting dates for 2008 are as follows: April 7th, June 2nd, September 8th, and November 3rd.
